I am thinking about getting some geophagus red head tapajos, but I am torn between a dark vs a light colored substrate. I know that a member of another forum with a massive discus/geophagus tank uses white sand and his fish are amazing. I want something that will make the color pop, as well as being fine enough not to damage their gills. Do geos pepper like discus on dark substrate, or do they wash out like other fish on a white substrate. My light substrate would be pool filter sand, and the dark sub would be black diamond blasting sand.

It's all in preference. I had a a group of altifrons on black and it really made them pop. The colors were so bold
Mine are on white sand and their colors still stand out.
Sorry to bring up an old thread! but I am looking at getting some redheads and wanted black sand with them. What kind of sand did you use?
Only used fine sand for geophagus
so would the caribsea be ok? I have seen quite a few use it but just want to make sure I plan everything out for when my tank comes in
