Geophagus surinamensis alone or in groups?

Pics and tanks I see have groups. Is it necessary to keep them in groups? I have a 4" in my 75 gallon with a oscar, firemouth, blue gourami, and Bolivian ram. So far no issues. Would I need to get more or do they do ok solo?
