So I bought a group of 7 geophagus tapajos orange heads at about 1-1.25" each 2 months ago. I've kept them together in a 29g for now, although I know I need to upgrade very soon. They are all about 2 inches now and coloring up nicely. Today, I believe two of them are showing signs of pairing! I'm no expert on cichlid mating behavior, and I can't even seem to sex my fish, but the thwo most active and healthy looking of my orange heads seem to be defending a territory near a flat rock. They are sticking together, nipping at the others, and doing a lot of tail shaking/wagging. Here is a video. You can see some wagging at the very end.
If they have paired up, could they even rear fry at this small size? And would it be better to separate the pair from the others, or just leave them all together in a much bigger tank? Is there any harm in keeping them in their own tank?
