What types would look good in a planted 55.also i wanted to get a school of neon tetras for it, will the geos eat them? I know there mouth is more than big enough but i just dont know if their carniverous at all?
If they do eat a tetra it would be on accident while sucking in pellets etc.. A 55 is too small for the larger Geophagus species. Possibly Geophagus steindachneri. Gymnogeophagus species would be a better option but they require a cool down period that may not work with the tetras.
You could some of the smaller species from the earth eater family but different genus such as Guianacara geayi etc.. That is what I would suggest the most.
Small geos are best. You can also do a small group of orange heads or something like G. parnaibae or G. pindare (I think pindare stays small). Orange heads are probably the most colorful of the smaller geos.
They shouldn't eat tetras, but my group of 3" parnaibae did kill a couple bettas. I have no idea why because I've never had Geos go after anything in my tanks before. I think it's an exception and not the rule.
Talk to Peter (peathenster)... he's got tons of growouts and could probably ship them to you really cheap via USPS. I'd do a group of 4 - 6 with a few tetra dithers and they should be okay in a 55. Or if they pair off, you could always just keep the pair in their own 55 with some dithers and watch them raise their fry. That'd be a cool tank.
Sounds like Ryansmith83 has the best Idea! you can make aheavily planted aquascaped tank with all kinds of dithers and other small fish swimming around. you could get some Hatchetfish or panchax for the surface of the tank (they give good movement). I used to have 4 Golden wonder Panchax and the female grew to almost 4.5" and dwarfed her male.
I have seen my Geophagus actively seek out and hunt Neon Tetras. I personally would not try it again. Smaller species only in a 55 gallon unless you are going to upgrade in the future.
