I'm thinking about adding some fish with my rays. It seems geophagus cichlids are somewhat popular. What species would be best to go with rays? My rays are motoros, from 8-10".

Anything you like, would be sufficient... in my opinion you should get some Tapajos Red heads. They are some of the nicest, either those or altifrons!
Good luck! and make sure ot get more females than males!!

Bump, help this person out.. any other suggestions? there are a lot of nice Geophagus species out there..

Also since your from maine where do you get your fish? Any real nice LFS around? Im southern NH.

There are a few fish stores around. The one I got my rays from is a small shop, run out of a house. They usually get odd ball fish in. The rest of the stores are mostly chain type (PetCo, Pet Quarters) and a few more small privately owned stores. Overall, the selection isn't very good up here. It's better for marine life.

The store where I got my rays occasionally has geos. I'm sure they could track down any type I decide to get. They have 2 small ones right now. I don't think I've seen geos in any other store around.

I have kept and bred leucosticta with my humerosa rays, and presently have balzani with my motoros.

Geos are the perfect fish for rays. Quiet, calm, non-agressive, good mid-water interest, and they nose around cleaning up what the rays miss.

As has already been said, any species would be suitable.

Thanks. The lfs has a balzani, but it is about about 3". Too small?

I would worry about a 10" motoro eating a 3" balzani. I've had good luck keeping Satanoperca leucosticta with young retics and motoros (about the same size as the rays). I also tried a group of Geophagus abalios which worked pretty well but they were more boisterous than the leucosticta and the constant chasing seemed to bother the rays a little.

balzini are a bad idea they have different tank requirements then rays.

Anything from the surinamous complex usually does good with rays. I would stay away from geo. sp. "red head tap." they stay relatively small and there is always the chance that your rays will decide to start mowing them down.

A. heckelli look good and tend to stay off the bottom of the tank so have a better chance with rays. Also like said above altifrons, and albios are nice looking geos.

wouldn't discus make a really nice addition to a ray tank as well? both like soft warmer water, and are really pretty, the discus i do believe like the mid water column no? I think I might try to eventually make my way that way with my setup

I put a 2 inch Balzani in my Ray tank with my 3 other Geo Altifrons(most people say they are, or surinamensis, but surinamensis are impossible to get)

What does your ray eat? unless your ray is a fish eater i wouldnt worry about anything happening to it. All my ray eats are worms and crawlers.

Watch out ordering from your LFS when gettin Geo's too... most LFS have no idea what they get in their orders especially if you get geos under 4". They all look very similar when young. Good luck.
