I've successfully kept Amazon Swords, Crypts and Anubias with Geophagus. Those plants can handle 80 degrees.

I have 6 red heads ~3in each in a planted tank and they haven't done any damage at all. I tried to do a lot of research before to get the right set-up, I think you just have to let the roots develop for a month or so before adding them. Or maybe I'm just getting lucky and when they get bigger they'll dig up my plants. I also placed or buried rocks next to some of them to discourage deep digging.

The male of my 3 year old tapajos red head breeding pair is pretty dedicated to uprooting plants, so I have to keep any in that tank pretty well anchored if I don't want to be replanting them every other day. He didn't start doing that until after they were producing fry. Otherwise I haven't seen geos be a particular problem with plants. If nothing else, it seems you can get the occasional individual that will bother your plants.
