Came home yesterday you find that my GBR pair were laying/fertilizing eggs! Since then, I have seen some odd/interesting behavior and wanted to know if it was normal for this particular dwarf Cichlid.

1. Once the eggs were laid & fertilized, the female would NOT allow the male near them. She would quickly chase him away from the area.

2. Now (this morning), the roles have reversed. The male is now guarding the eggs and will NOT allow the female to get too close to them.

Now, I've read that often the first few breeding attempts w/ GBR's can fail if they are a new/young pair (which they are). It just seems odd that they are not sharing the duty of defending the eggs and confused on their role(s). In my previous experience w/ breeding CA/SA's, both the male and female defend the eggs together. Does anybody have any experience with this and/or similar GBR behavior?

Thanks!

It's not uncommon. Usually males guard the perimeter and females guard the eggs, but the roles may reverse. Sometimes one can get overly protective and not letting the other near the eggs, but most of the time it's just different responsibilities.
