Hi i dont have a prob with ammonia in my tanks and i'm just curious how to get it down if it is high? Is it a fast fish killer? what caouses it?

they make chemicals you can put into your tank that converts ammonia to a harmless form.

ammonia can easily kill fish

Use Prime, a double dose. You can also add carbon and zelite to your filter, and you probably need more biomedia. A good bacteia product like biospira would help too. Is the tank cycled?

Other than a fully functional biofiltration colony the best and fastest way (IMO) to bring down ammonia is a couple of successive water changes, the main other way is chemical treatment, such as ammo-lock and ammo-carb.

+1 on the successive water changes. I'm not a fan of "Ammonia removing chemicals" because they work like a sponge; once saturated, they aren't absorbing squat anymore.
Of course, the second most important thing to rember regarding ammonia levels is to figure out why you have ammonia in the first place and correct it.

Keeping ammonia down = "water changes, water changes".
Kinda like the gospel of business owners with a storefront; "location, location".

Agreed PRIME is PIMP :) For setting up your tank :)
