I read the 'Ton of Info on FRT' by Oddball, great stuff! There was a part that said that FRT are especially prone to becoming 'addicted' to one type of food. How do I get Herbert to start eating things OTHER than his algae wafers? I wanna give him the best diet possible, but if i can't get him to eat anything else its a little hard.

What foods CAN i feed him? I don't want to put something in there that can harm him. Are all citrus fruits alright? What about tomatoes? Avacados? I'm all about adding food for him. It said water lettuce, so I think I'm gonna get a bunch of that and add it to the tank. Anyway, any help, hints, tips would be appreciated! Thanks!
Cheers,
~PP

I usually leave some type of lettuce or fruit in the tank during the morning for squirttle (my frt) to graze on throughout the day. I then remove it in the afternoon when I get home from work, then feed algea wafers to her. If you try this be careful not to let the grazing food stay in the tank to long due to water quality issues. Not sure about citrus and its effects on water though? I would imagine it would make your water more acidic hence higher ph maybe?!?!?

Ive tried various fruits and veggies to see if she will try them. Just experiment and see what herbie likes and dislikes. Ive heard of watermellon, cantalope, apples, grapes, etc. Ive also read somewhere not to feed brocolli for some reason unknown to me?!?!?

In my experience its all about trying different things AND cutting the fruit/veggie up small enuf for your frt to eat. Example being squirttle will only eat grapes if I cut them in half! LOL (I swear shes like a child sometimes).

Good luck and keep us updated!

Aight, thanks guys. Wouldn't it LOWER the pH if its acidic though? haha....;). I'll give it a try, last time i tried grapes he just ignored them and went right for the wafers...:swear:

i doubt the citrus fruit will lower the ph of the water. just remove excess when he's done eating.

all citrus should be ok

unless you dumb enough to feed it a lemon

which your not :D

i hope.......j/k

no, acid makes a lower pH

and yes you shouldnt feed broccoli

i shall explain why:

brocoli contains compounds called Goitrogens

these are compounds that bind the iodine in food, preventing the body from using it.

The thyroid gland (which is located in the neck) needs iodine to function properly

The hormones produced by this gland aid in skin production and shedding; regulating metabolism, energy, and activity levels; growth and temperament.

you can deal with this by simply not feeding the following vegetables: Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy, brussel sprouts, kale, soy and grain.

just feed it fruits right before you do a water change.. those lil bits of fiber can wreck
havoc on your filter.

del - thanks for the chemistry lesson bro...

p.s. i see your iguana and raise you 20 kids ages 5-6 - 6 hours a day 180 days a year!

TOP THAT! LOL
