Okay so I have a 180 and I really wanna get a frontosa...
  1. Can I get a single frontosa? I really only want one. Or is the bare minimum 3?
  2. I'm looking for a bright frontosa, no dark/black frontosa. Any recommendations?
  3. I know that zaires are the most expensive and burundi are the cheapest, can someone give me a list of the frontosas in the middle starting with the most expensive to the cheapest and average price range?
Here are a couple of frontosa that I am interested in, can someone help me identify or give me a recommendation of what frontosa to get:

I don't want the frontosa to be dark.

1. Yes they do better in groups, yes you could buy just one, but it will be happier with more, perferably female. Groups are recommended.
2. There is no specific species of frontosa that is dark. The dark/black color is more or less a display color.... (like mine get dark or sometimes really light when stressed out, not much you can do).
3. Price can vary on any and all depending on the dealer and where you live. Usually Burundi, Kigoma and Mpimbwe are the cheaper ones and the ziares are the more costly... (they are the blue blue ones..). Prices really depends on where you buy. You can find some good deals with reputable sellers on aquabid. I bought my on aquabid.

Really.... if you are looking for the cheap way out than just stay with burundi... Its really something you gotta do some research on to figure out what you like. I did a lot of google searching on different speices before I figured out what I wanted. There is a good thread posted in the section about the different frontosa... take a look at it it might help you decide.

I agree with the above, and would like to reiterate that coloration can be mood-dependent or utilized as a display.

Mpimbwe's would be a good selection.

Fyi, the fish in the last photo isn't a frontosa (that's a Neolamprologus tretocephalus or 'tret' for short). Also from Lake Tanganyika.

kigomas are my fave and should be more readily available and cheaper IME. They have 7 stripes and yellow in their fins also. The true C. Frontosa.

I agree, that last pict is a tret, not a frontosa, but they are also cool, and stay smaller

I was doing research about Frontosa because I was thinking of keeping some. I found that they are best kept in groups of 6-8 or 1 male to 3 females. And if kept in a community tank keep with bigger fish because they are predator fish and will eat smaller fish.

I had a colony of 7... 2 males and 5 females, but you can keep a trio of one male and 2 females. I prefer Mpimbwe which are not considered Frontosa, but rather Gibberosa... Frontosa are referred to Burundi.
