I have always been fairly anti gun but because of some recent events I have decided I need one. I am clueless when it comes to guns so I need some help

First things first, I have no idea what the laws are in my state, I live in FL. Can someone please direct me to a good site outlining what I need to do and who I need contact?

Next, I will need a gun that will be powerful enough to stop someone yet contained enough that it is not going to continue through that person and either into one of my cobra cages, large aquariums, or into the next apartment possibly injuring someone else. What sort of things should I be looking for? would a low caliber pistol or a small shotgun work? What about beanbag rounds (if they even exist outside of Hollywood)?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Maybe you should be checking with local and state PD and not on the fish forum.

^lol ya. A 9mm handgun is a good one. Enough knockdown power, low chance of overpenitration, cheap gun and cheap ammo. smaller grip so anyone can hold/use it easily like wife or gf. Or a FN F57...it's wat I have and def the best handgun I've ever used

honestly bro, get a big ass taser, they make'em to where u can shoot them and ur not looking at man slaughter, plus u dont have to worry about getting a carrying permit or license, or it going thru somebody... taser is the better option

pm me and ill lead you in the right direction. Im a police officer in FL. Taser is a bad idea. i dont even use one cause theyre unreliable.

i would go with a .45 .40 or 9mm. theyre relatively compact, and can knock you down pretty darn quick.

I will eventually. Out of town right now and just doing some "google" style research and figured it couldn't hurt to ask here too.

Thanks, I will look into it.

Already have a taser. It's not going to do too much good in a home invasion sort of scenario though.

Okay, thanks.

Go with .45 or .40 cal. 9mm is a reliable round but it also has a tendency to penetrate the person you happen to be shooting at. I unfortuanatly have to use a 9mm for work when I am deployed (US Army Infantryman) and on several occasions I have shot people who have had several rounds penetrate the chest and continue out the back without flinching. A .45 or .40 cal with good hollowpoints will stop just about anyone on the first shot. Several companies also make rounds that will not penetrate all the way through the body cavity and instead just about shatter on impact. If you have no expierence with firearms I would suggest you take several sessions of classes and many, many hours on a range until you are very comfortable on a range. Instead of a firearm, have you thought about getting a good dog instead. I prefer not to suggest firearms to anyone that not had a serious amount of training on the handling of firearms.

9mm is fine, the reason why the poster above has the issues of over penetration is because he is limited to using FMJs only. Modern personal defense rounds are excellent and 9mm will get the job done.

If youve been anti gun and are thinking about getting one because of "recent events" you are in trouble. You dont need to worry about over penetration because you WILL miss. Dont be offended about that. I shoot 1,000s of rounds a year and I dont totally expect that all of my rounds will be on target 100% of the time. Its just that I assume you have little experience so your chances of missing are even greater.

In your situation with your hots and what I can only assume is that you are in some real danger from an invasion for what ever reason, you may need to rethink about getting a gun. Perhaps its best to move your hots or move all together to get away from the threat.

Legally yes, I am limited to FMJ's but I have only carried them on one deploymet and on others I used various other rounds. My main problem is the stopping power. Too many times I have seen over penetration and do not trust them. Like I said before, in my personal opinion and the opinion of many others I know, .45 and .40 cal is a much better round. That is why they are the predominat caliber carried by those of us that I know with CCP's and also police officers. This is also the reason that many police departments have now or are in the process of changing "Official"calibers.
