Okay, so I'm really jealous of all the great looking midas we have in the forums. I know its pretty hard to get a pure midas but would petsmart be a reliable source of getting some pure ones? I have seen a couple of tanks that have midas in them and a seperate tank that has red devils.

What do you think guys/gals?

no, petsmart is not a reliable place to get a pure midas. the best place to get a pure midas is from www.tangledupincichlids.com. you should check out his website and see if there are any lfs in your area that order from him.

any rd or midas you see in an lfs is most likely going to be a mix of the 2 species. :)

if your just looking for the midas "look" some of the mixes still get that, but you wouldnt have the satisfaction of it being pure. i was actually at a petsmart a decent while ago and i saw a "midas" at about two inches that was almost done peeling, that thing looked great.

Ken Davis at fishfarm(vendor here on mfk) or Jeff Rapps at tangled up in cichlids.Petsmarts are all hybrids of the 2

I agree......Petsmart midas are actually more like Red devils... their body shape is slightly different.. also.. petsmart tends to mislabel things.. , they might look like midas, but not quite.....

Also.. Midas are more white/orange in color....

I like to rack my brain at trying to distinguish traits from the Red Devil and Midas cichlid tanks at PetSmart. You may even see big differences in their stock of Labiatus and Citrinellus from time to time. But, not pure citrinellus. There may be some convincing specimens though.

Go with the aformentioned Tangled Up in Cichlids or Fishfarm USA.

Those hybrids can still grow to be impressive fish though, don't count them out.

Trust me I have a rd/midas that's as pretty as pure ones. However, i just
want a pure one.
