Im not sure how old the stuff is inside the filter. I will find out tomorrow. What are the time frames of "oldness" I should look for to replace the bio media Or do I even have to? Im thinking the guy had it for about a year or two but it could be more. I will obviously change the pads throughout. Also If I do have to change it, do I go with the eheim substrat pro? What are cheaper but similar alternatives?

Also, does mech media need changing? Im looking to start with a fresh setup but im willing to keep the old media as long as its good. I was looking to give everything a good rinsing and running it TOGETHER with my eheim 2215 in a 120. Will that be ok to help my new filter establish bacteria? Any info is welcome. Thanx.

typically a nice rinsing with some hot water will do the trick. I'm not a fan of bioballs in a canister because they don't ahve as much surface area as some alternatives, so if you're up for replacing them, go for it!

i purchased a 2028 last month did a quick rince on it and have had it running fine every since.
