Im seriously thinking about opening an aquarium. How much would be needed to do this as an initial price? What do you need? (Licences etc) How do you go about it? Just anything that you need to know.

Please say if your just guessing or giving an opinion too lol

Cheers,
Keith

there are some good articles on wetwebmedia in reference to this sort of thing, if you'd like to read up on that.

Thanks for that! Ill start reading now. I live in scotland if that helps people with giving me estimates.

So, tell us more about the sort of business you are thinking of. At least in the US an aquarium and a fish shop are totally separate things. Do you mean you would have a display area that people would pay to view, as well as a shop selling fish and supplies?

Sorry, now i look back it does sound a little off. I mean a fish shop. Have a livestock viewing area, i.e. tanks. And the part if the shop which sells food, equipment, tanks, books etc.

I have a friend who is a reptile keeper and when i mentioned this hes asked to have a section for a reptile house, this a good idea?

Im seriously thinking of this but its still at a basic anything can happen point.

This sounds like the Aquatic Critter in Nashville. They have adjacent but separate fish and herp sections. Besides the normal stock aquaria they have several large and well-decorated tanks: a stingray pool, a big bowfront cichlid tank, a big reef tank. In the herp section there are caimans in a pool, an arboreal monitor setup, and a nice dart frog vivarium that are all display-only; on weekends they even let you toss fish to the caimans for a dollar or two. I believe their nice displays earn them at least some traffic they would not otherwise get.

Sorry, I have no help for you on the business end, but it sounds like a good model. Do you have prior business experience?

None atall, been my dream since i was 8, im 18 now btw lol im thinking if i start at it young I could make such a good place. Its my hobby, not only for money, id look after the tanks so well and have decent fish and give proper advice that no othe petshop around this place seems to offer.

Expertise, good customer service, and passion for your work are great and will make your business a grand success IF they sit on a firm foundation of good ol' business fundamentals. Are you planning on going to college? If so, take all the business, finance, accounting, and management classes you can. They will go a long way helping you towards your goal.

I'd say if you start the business now you have a very high chance of it failing; most business startups do, and usually it's because of a less-than-perfect grasp of the fundamentals. I recommend taking it slow and building up your skill set first.

Im not going to college, i have a job at the moment but my mate who wants to do the reptile thing has business management and accounts. I have administration, dont think that helps though lol. We're going to meet up one time and have a bit of paper and a pen and really go through everything :)
