Lately I've been thinking about getting away from some of the more aggressive Central American Cichlids. I just recently set up an Angel fish tank and I have to say they are really fun. No real aggression to speak of and I can actually sit and watch them without running to get a net an fish something out thats stirring up crap with tankmates. I think I want to try Discus again too and do it the right way with a bare bottom tank and no adding Discus everytime I go to the fish store. I'm so tired of having to trade a trouble making fish in because I don't have the tank space for him/her. Does anyone else feel the same way and what have you changed over to? I was even thinking about Brackish water but they seem pretty aggressive too. Of course I'll keep some of my favorite Centrals but I wouldn't mind trying some new things.

I started out with Semi-aggressive Cichlids and got over it quite quickly. Typically I started out wanting an Oscar to eat things and something to impress friends or the like, but got over that within a few weeks and realized that a calm tank with healthy occupants was much more rewarding to me. This required a few trade-ins and sales to get me there but it was worth it as I'm incredibly pleased with my current tank stocking.

To a certain extent, Eartheaters provide the physical chasing and action of their more aggressive cousins, without the damage. They're very active and lively fish and you don't need to worry about them.

I got my gold severums after reading about how nice and non aggressive they were, but that was a pile of crap or mine are an exception to the rule as they are a nasty pair who attack anything that moves.
I used to have some blue acra and they were very laid back, I never saw any aggression out of them what so ever.
I have to admit I love my aggressive fish though, most are single fish tanks so it's not about them beating on stuff more the interaction with me, and I love my Oscars, they aren't overly aggressive with each other and I don't feed them live foods often only fry from my other fish now and then, I never have been one for the mindless destruction of a living creature to impress others, I would rather just throw a ping-pong Ball in the tank and watch them play.
I have always wanted to do a discus tank though I think that would be really relaxing.

My gold saum female is extremely aggressive but that is just her personality. My other two fish take cover behind my Midavil. But I don't like her just to show off to friends or anything. Well not just because of aggression anyways.

Angels are cool too. Before I had to get rid of them I had a tank with angels and cory cats. The angels stayed schooled at the top and the corys stayed schooled on the bottom. A perfect arrangement.

I've got a female like this but she's getting put in line by my even more peaceful male Chocolate Cichlid. My male H. efasciatus wouldn't hurt a fly though, so to speak, which causes problems when the Female is aggressive but it'll work itself out eventually.

Dude I hear ya!! I just made the switch to keepin geos and I really dig them. I even went out the other day and bought a small shoal of back neons and some corys. Unheard of by me.....

I changed to the non agro stuff years ago...
