I was thinking about getting back into breeding. Does anyone from Ohio know what is currently in demand for central and south american cichlids?

The thing about breeding cichlids is that they are generally easy to breed and they kick out a ton of fry, which means there arent many that there are a significant demand for from small breeder operations. I'd say your best bet would be something that is typically more difficult to breed. Maybe even ask around at lfs what is in demand.

I don't commonly see either in central IN lfs

Here in central Indiana we can get fire mouths, jack dempseys, convicts, red devil, jags, and flowerhorns just about anywhere so I'd say ohio prolly has about the same selection as Indiana.

Yes same selection...those are considered the bread and butter of most pet shops around here.

Was thinking about breeding some Cubans and Dovii. I wonder how hard it would be to get ride of the fry in this area.

Cubans would be a good idea Dovii I would avoid because of the size they attain. Cubans, rtm, festae, beani, carpintis, true parrots....are a few that I can think of that I don't see for sale too often locally.

In my area, at local aquarium society auctions, depending on what people are breeding, you could get a bag of 10 young dovii, or managuense for less than $5.
I had beani spawning last year, and was getting $3 each, and when I had haitiensus and tetracanthus (Cubans) spawning a few years ago, I had a hard time giving them away.
If they were 1 year old or older, they might fetch a better price, but then you need many and large grow out tanks.
As far as what might get you real money,
the other Cuban, Nandopsis ramsdeni, last time I saw them at $300 each
or the African Heterochromis multidens.
I just saw a group of 6 x 2inch H multidens for sale, for $1500. (yes, one thousand five hundred)
These are very specialized fish, and may have a very selected audience though.

Tetracanthus has always been my favorite cichlid. I use to have one loved his personality, so I will defiantly have to look into Nandopsis ramsdeni :)

My lfs is a nice big mom and pop store. They have every variety of nandopsis - haits tetracanthis Festae and grammodes. There is unfortunately little or no demand for these and when I ask about them the owners insist I am the only one who I knows what they are. It's sad. I would recommend trying you hand at something a little more family friendly such as rams or apistos. These tend to be smaller and community friendly. It's sad that nobody locally is interested in large centrals with large tank requirements anymore. I am in northwest ohio.
