Used to be a regular on here many years ago, had 4 tanks, one temperate, 3 tropical. Had kids so stopped keeping fish but want to get back into it. Want 2 tanks, one with a Betta, maybe a few tankmates, but not sure what will do well with the Betta, and also not sure what size tank to get. Also want a bigger tank, but not sure what we want in it yet other than a golden nugget pleco and some glowlight tetras. So just looking for advice for now please on what goes well together, and what size tanks are good, type of filtration eyc. In UK.

Hello welcome back.
For bettas I personally like tanks in the 2.5-10 gallon range. For tankmates, pretty much anything that is small and is not nippy, and also looks nothing like a betta, will do. Depending on the tank size. In a 2.5 gallon I would just put a couple snails or ghost shrimp with it. In a 10 gallon, maybe some ricefish would be nice. Filtration wise, a small hang on back would be fine, bettas don't like lots of flow.

In the larger tank, as the fish you want are south American (pleco and tetras) I would make that into a south American river tank with some sort of dwarf cichlid, like guianacara sphenozona or biotodoma cupido. small group of them with other peaceful small SA fish, and natural décor, would make a nice display imo.
