got some small tanks for free with a small filter, some rocks and fake plants. didnt notice it until i got home but it smelled of cigarettes. whats the best way of getting the smell out of everything? i could air it out in my garage if the cold wont affect the tanks but its -10c.

They sell cleaning agents that are supposed to rid things of smoky smell. Not sure if there safe for fish but you could clean them with viniger after your done. I think you would be able to find it at wal mart

Clean it all in a mild bleach water solution and you will be good to go.

would it be vinegar/water soak or just vinegar/water scrub down?

Well you're in the cold like me, but what I do in the summer time is take it outside, splash vinegar all over the tank, and stuff, scrub with a sponge, and then just rinse everything really well.

Since it's winter you might want to try a similar operation in the bathtub, I guess.

Probably just scrub with vinegar, then scrub twice as well with water.
