Mine are pretty reclusive and hide like the other 2/3's of my catfish. I used too have the big huge giant crap-machine common plecos a few years back an they would chase my Jaguars and JDs lol How do I get to actually see these smaller shyer species more than once a week?

Algae wafers?

Try slice of zucchini, or like you stated algae wafers and see if that helps. I have 2 BN that hide, but noticed if hungry will come out to seek the pellet or wafers .:) Had 2 large Sailfin that stayed out in the open and would chase other fish too.:)

Though counter-intuitive, have more hiding places (where you can see them) like caves/pots available. That way they feel more secure with the ability to make a quick dash to hide if they need to.

ok, i'll try it...haven't given anything outside of Romaine/peas/lima beans since I started back up doing fish. For a fish with no teeth they sure get aggressive, don't they?

I don't think that's possible considering my tanks all kinda have a mini-Carlsbad Caverns in them lol I likes the caveses...always lots of caveses in my tankses. :P

The Rubber-Lip Pleco with my cichlids started out just like yours. It was always hiding under rocks and in the sand a little, bolting at every sight of me. Now he is very active and out and about much more and even stays out when I'm near. What helped with mine, and it may sound cheesy, but was spending time around the tank. I got a chair and put it near the tank so I could relax and watch the fish. Within the next week, it got adjusted to me and the other fish and I couldn't be happier with it. And I've found that mine loves sinking shrimp pellets and loves caves only it can fit into. My BN Pleco on the other hand is always active and social. Ill try and post a pic or 2 then.

I've never seen an active clown, although someone on here posted that their clown is active.

IMO, clowns hide more then any other pleco.
