hey guys, im going to be graduating from college soon and the real world is cocking back its hand to give me a big slap in the face as a welcome. but beyond that i have come to the conclusion that maintaing aquariums and working with animals is the only thing that be a satisfying carrer.

anybody have any suggestions on the best way to get into the business in some form.
i have thought about trying to get a job at petsmarts corporate offices, or searching for a lfs thats looking for a manager.

anybody here in the professional side of MFKing and if so how did you get there.

  I love how you worded that.

I would find a good LFS or really, any kind of business and apply for a manager position.

Before you own your own place, you should test the waters and see what managing is all about.
All the school in the world is no substitute for experience.

So i would try to get some experience working at one of those types of companies and you can always work on setting up your own business in your free time.

well if you are looking to get into the maintinance side of the business I would start spreading the word and go to a few LFS and let talk with the managers in helping them by them helping you. Set up that everything you buy will be on their leads that they give you. Ones that you get on your own you find the store that gives you the biggest discount, and offer a finders fee, I would say go with a one time fee so that it doesn't get too costly to have them send you the business.

I raise fish and sell them as a hobby and a small tax dodge. I've had a small trout farm in the past and although I find all things aquatic my first love, I think it would be very dificult to make enough to keep me in the style that my wife has decided I should be acustomed too. Now I work as an industrial automation and electrical contractor and do well enough at that to pay for my leisure time interests
Having said that you need to find your own way. All the best in whichever direction you choose to go.

I've been involved either part-time or full-time in the pet ndustry since 1970. First off, there's not alot of money for most of the industry individuals. There have been a few recent threads here on the forum. Do a search. I'm willing to answer general questions on this thread here. If you want to go more in depth later you can PM me.

they say.....

Find something you love to do...... and you never "work" another day in your life........

they also say......

Don't mix business with pleasure.......

the latter seems to be more true in my case........

It really depends upon how much money you want to make and what you would be willing to sacrifice to get it...... there are not too many people in the fish business who are millionaire...... in fact i could probably count them on one hand......

my personal suggestion is keep it "part time"...... go back to school and be a lawyer....... I would if i could....... ;)

im sure my girlfriend would love it if i worked at a pet store or for one, cause then i might get it out of my system at work and spend less of our time together cleaning my tank feeding my fish slowly browsing at the pet store. reading food labels and chemical labels and most often day dreaming about the perfect tank while shes talking to me
