My gar is still not taking food off a skewer. He will only take live food. I waited a few days before feeding him when I thought he was starving and i tried to no avail. I know feeders are not the best food source so I need some advice to get him to eat other stuff. Any advice on how to get him off feeders?

I'm pretty sure these fish COULD go a few weeks without food, so maybe try for about a week or so. Maybe no more than 10 days for now.
He'll eat eventually... they all do :headbang2

bad spat!! do not encourage starving!!
to the OP do a quick search. it will turn up alot of methods. there are many that have been proven to work.

I used a variety of live foods to train them to take all kinds of food. After they were train on alot of diff foods i got them to eat floating shrimp(only way they would eat shrimp innetionally) then they would eat all shrimp. then all prepared

Try starting the skewer with live food on it. They should go for it. Once they associate the skewer with food, then start trying new (i.e. dead) foods on the skewer.

I also don't think you should starve your gars, they aren't that hard to convert to new foods.

Have you tried dropping food in right next to him? All of my new gars went for pellets and shrimp (and anything else i threw in) when they saw it falling next to them. I think its because since its falling its moving, and they go for anything that moves around them. Have you only tried the skewer?

My bad I didnt see that you are trying to teach him to HAND FEED lol

But just to be sure, does he eat sinking food?
