Hey everyone,

I have a 40 gallon tank that had about 30lbs of aragonite in it that ended developing an infestation of these small snails. They are not MTS but look similar with a fater shell.

Either way I took out all of the substrat and wanted to disinfect it.

Could I put it little by little in a pot of boiling water? How long would it need to be in there to ensure that all of the snails are indeed dead? Maybe 60 seconds?

Is ther any particular method that works best for this?

Thank in advance for the Advice!

Andrew

Try some loaches, snail eating maniacs.

idk what they are but i know exactly what u are talking about. even the assassian snails wont touch em, and they are much smaller than mts but a bit fatter cone shape. i never saw them till i tried to rid my tank of mts and pond snails with cuprimine and broke it all down then these came and i cant rid them. good luck please keep us posted with results

my two clown loaches seem to prefer the smaller snails to the larger ones and after 6mo to a year they cleaned the entire tank of em! I even considered getting them snails from the lfs! I hardly see any snails anymore including the large ones because they know there's a predator there and often worry about the loaches fighting for food with my mbunas.. The problem with this is you will have a bunch of empty shells laying around... like a graveyard :(

I have some loaches in my 180gallon AND some assassin snails! The combo has done well but the Loaches will occassionally eat an Assassin snal or two. I had 12 in there at one time and now there are like 3 that are living...?

Yep! I didn't really noticed these ones until I started using "Cobalt Flakes" being that it's in selected tanks Only which are the ones that I've used that food with?

Maybe a coincidence.

either way, I boiled the aragonite that was in that tank for a coupl eminutes a batch today and then threw it in a 5 gallon full a water. I'm going to let it sit to see if that does the trick or if some will start trying to surface. I didn't see any moving though...

Yeah, LOL- I have that in my 180gal!

They are always at one of the tank where the accumulate form the high water flow that my Maxijet creates in that tank.
