have a planted 30 gal thats overun with snails. tried adding an assasin snail to keep them in check but it completly ignores them. what i really want to do is use a piece of dw thats covered in java fern and java moss in another tank. how to i ensure thst the snails dont make the trip with the dw ? if i left the dw soaking in a bhcket would the snails die off with out a food source ? how long will it take ?

If i wash of any plants i want to reuse would that be enough to ensure the snails dont tag along ?

Hello; Leaving the plants in a bucket to starve out the snails likely will not work. The snails will probably munch on the plants for one thing.

Depending on what type snail you have as to the washing. The MTS (maylasian trumpet snails) are live bearers and it might be that you could wash thenm all off. They start out tiny so you might miss a few.
The other types of snails lay eggs and cover the eggs in a tough protective coating. My thinking being that the plants will be damaged before washing these off.

My general attitude toward snails is to like them in a tank. I keep them in my planted tanks. I think a general consenus is that snails do not overrun a tank unless there is too much food available. I have found this to be true for me. Back when I overfed I had a big snail population, now not at all.

Good luck

Thx for the input and yes i def over feed this tank. Small pilys im trying to grow out.....guess the dw and plants stay put then. I dont mind them in this tank but dont want them in my orher tanks

Add loaches, clowns, yoyo's, zebra's, nothing controls the snail popn more effectively

Mhhh son loves loaches which ones stay on the smaller side ?

crown loach is answer :)
He will eat all snails.
My grandfather had snail problem about 1 year ago. He add 6 crown loach to his tank.
Problem solved in few days :D

I was going to say loaches to there are also a few Vic's like like the Hippo Point that are supposed to eat snails. If all else fails there are commercial snail poisons that contain copper that kill them. You have to be carefull though to get one that won;t harm your fish or plants.
