A few months ago I got a few salvini in order to get a dominant breeding pair, now they haven't paired yet but I think im ready to find a new home for the sub-dominant males so they can fully develop in someone else's tank. Will taking them out affect the colors of the dominant male? He's pretty bright. They're all around 3-4"

I'm not a Salvini expert, I just purchased a male and female a few weeks ago. But I think that as long as their is a female with him he still should maintain his coloration. A friend of mine has about 6 of them growing out in a 150 and most of them are bright and colorful. He's trying to get a pair too. Your results after removing the other male Salvini could help him too. I'm interested to find out what happens.

Only my biggest male is bright yellow with blue and red, the rest are almost the same size but brown. The female is the most colorful though. I'll remove the males today and post what happens.

CA- i gotta salvini male and hes brown most of the time, anyway to color him up? hes not the boss of the tank so im guessin no. any chance he will wen he gets bigger? ive heard as they get bigger that they dont.

My male colored up by itself at around 3 inches... he was pretty dull before. I feed him bloodworms, krill, spirulina brine shrimp, nls cichlasoma formula and nls thera+a

I also think he'll stay colored up for the female, but I just wanted to point something out - females don't necessarily pair with the dominant male. They USUALLY do, but if you're dying for a pair, it's something that might be worth considering.

It sounds as if there's only one female - is that the case? Are they still fairly small? (I'm just wondering why there seems to be no pairing off)

Enjoy your salvinis! I always loved the ones I've kept.
