Hi All

I am planning on putting a nice big piece of driftwood into my 150 SA/CA tank.
The question i have isn't about cleaning the wood or anything it is about the water chemistry.

-Will the wood affect the fish negatively because it will lower the PH? i have never altered my PH and it comes out of the tap @ 7

Thanx

Most of your cichlids (except the severum) may prefer slightly alkaline water....but again the dw may or may not lower the pH significantly. I'd say try it and monitor how the pH changes....worse case a large scale water change to get back to 7....

And you can always bump up the pH with chemicals if you want dw at high pH...

Yup it'll lower the PH....Oscar crazy is right.. keeping the PH steady is better than it going up and down!.. my water comes out at 7.. and I have a HUGE peice of driftwood in my tank and it makes my PH go down to 6.2 or lower.. but its been like that for about a year.. Oh also the wood will release tannins.. rinse it off and keep in a bucket for about a week doing daily water changes till the water is clear enough.. ( I personally like the light brown look of tannin in my water..) to me It's natural...

I'd just watch it so that it in case it swing drastically, shouldn't be a huge deal though. Remeber a stable ph is more important than the "right" ph

i agree with you that is why im rather gonne go with the fake (plastic) "driftwood" thing.
