I've got a 55 brackish with scats, dats, cats, monos and a rogue firemouth. Ammonia is nil. Ph 7.8 and salinity is 1.012. My GH is off the chart. Now my source water is fine and even tried purified water to be sure. A month of doing weekly 25% to 35% wcs and I've gotten no noticeable reduction to GH. The kit tests fine.
Of all the people I've spoken to locally, one guy at my LFS thinks it is leeching from the wood that is breaking down the shells in the substrate causing the hardness. I don't know what to think but at least it is a hypothesis. My substrate is 80% clay and 20% sand.
it doesn't seem to be bothering the fish so unless it will cause an issue over time, I think i'll leave it be. I could start changing filter medium but everything else about the water chem seems fine.
any other thoughts out there?
