today i setup my first outdoor pond, ghetto style. its just a 300g rubbermaid with an aquaclear70 powerhead pumping water through about a cubic foot of biomedia with 15 comets in the pond.

anyways my questions are what plants can i add to the pond and whats generally needed to help with algea and also filtrationwise?

thins is just a practice pond till i start to redo my backyard this summer, then i will do a real nice pond.

Hyacinth and Water Lettuce will provide shade, shelter, and use up nutrients.

Any potted marginal plant will aid in filtration. They will also have to be set on bricks or milk crates to provide the correct depth. May want to consider this since they will take up some footprint and swimming space.

A potted lily can be set into the bottom of the pond. Won't help much in filtration, but will look sweet and provide shade.

I started with 11 water hyacinths about 6 months ago. I now have well over 60 of them in my bog!! They are flowering at a rate of about 4-5 every other day, and new ones are popping up all over the place. I'm going to have to start separating them down into the pond before they overflow the bog!
