I'm converting a few tanks to SW and I figured I would attempt to make a ghetto Stomatopod setup.

I'm thinking, 20 long tank, emperor 400 hob filter, gutted and filled with live rock, no biowheels, 10g DIY sump with a cheap hob skimmer off ebay. I'm thinking a 2inch or 3 inch sand bed, with pvc and LR rubble in tank. Other equipment, I would be running a homemade pvc overflow, 250gph powerhead in tank, and a ehiem 500gph return pump in the sump. Lighting would be a 24 inch 4 bulb t5ho

what size stomatopod would fit in this setup, as far as smashers go that is, I am not looking to get the o so common peacock, i want something different lol

I feel like you have to much flow, a 250gal power head, and a 500gal return is well over what you need, I would say cut out the powerhead, and get a smaller return... say a 300 or 350gal at most. But its your system so really up to you. You could probably put just about any of the mantis shrimp I can think of in there... except maybe the biggest ones, so any of the ones between 4" and 10" would probably be fine. Overalll the setup sounds fine for one of these.

You should do a Odontodactylus japonicus. If you can find them that is. I've never seen any I just think the photos look awesome! I'm just setting up a tank for my P. ciliata. Like bugger was just begging for me to take him home and now I'm starting my first SW.....and now it starts!
