I'm thinking about getting a black ghost knife for my 120 gallon. Dimensions are 48" long 24"wide and I think its 24 or 26" high? Anyway from my research it seems like he will be OK with
1-severum
1-blood parrot
1-jack Dempsey
1-cutteri cichlid
1-kirin parrot
1-common pleco
8-12-rainbow fish
None of the cichlids mess with the pleco so I'm assuming they won't mess with the bgk. Plus they stick to them selves. I have 2 canisters and a few plants ( amazon sword and java ferns).

I was thinking of starting him off in my 20 gallon and hand feeding him or at least pellet training him.I have plenty of rock work for him and I'm not against adding more driftwood for him but my family wouldn't be OK with an unnatural tube for him.
So would he be OK in this setup? (I'll post a pic of the tank if needed)

Your set up sounds ok but bgk get fairly big so you might end up overstocked eventually but they grow very slowly so won't be a problem for a while. Ime they get picked on a fair bit so I don't think it will work with some of the cichlids but maybe someone can chime in on that 1.

They like low light, lots of hiding places and very clean, soft water and not to much flow, they hide a lot until they settle in and you may not see its for up to a week and its best to feed at night and slowly ween it onto feeding with the lights on, mine also loved small worms it went crazy for them! Good luck

I've looked up compatibility and the most aggressive cichlid (the jack Dempsey) has been kept with bgks with success. Mine is a female and not very aggressive. Really the only things the cichlids are aggressive to is eachother.

When you say overstocked do you mean space or bioload wise? If bioload I would be willing to add another canister.

Would the 20 gallon be OK to pellet and hand train him?

Maybe it will be ok then, the only cichlids I've kept are oscars and p.bass so there's no way it would work with them lol

A bit of both when they are all fully grown, adding another canister will only help slightly unless you end up with an ammonia or nitrite problem, if not the only way it will help is adding water volume and canisters only add a small amount, you would have to do a lot of water changes to keep the water quality good.

As for the 20g it depends what size you buy the bkg, the only problem I can see with getting a small 1 is the other fish outgrow it and you never being able to put it in your main tank, ime they are very slow growers

Not sure, that tank is plenty for a bgk on its own I'm just not sure about all of your stock, hopefully someone else can give you a definite answer. you will probably be ok, you will see if its getting cramped so as long as you have a good water test kit and are willing to trade something out or upgrade if there are any problems then you will be fine :)
