I was wanting to set up a breeding tank for Ghost Shrimp to feed to my Bichirs. Any tips on breeding these guys? How many should I start out with? Anything I should worry about?

Breeding ghost shrimp is super easy. The problem is raising the babies. From what I understand its extremely difficult. I always see my ghost shrimp with eggs but have never seen and babies. You could try cherry shrimp. They are a lot easier to raise then the ghost shrimp.

I had them multiply in my sump, I used to remove the sponge pre filter and a few hundred would go into thevmain tank and a few weeks later the sump would be over run. They aren't tough at all and will eat ANYTHING.

I had looked into this and my conclusion, though I have yet to implement it, was to go red cherry shrimp. They are much heartier, babies are born already developed which is a huge help, breeding takes no effort, and if you get too many, sell them for like 4 times more than ghost shrimp sell for. One question I never did have answered was what kind of nutritional value they have.

They sell commonly on ebay and aquabid. I even saw a guy selling on craigslist in my area a while back. Little extra cost up front, but hands down a better plan. What size of tank were you thinking? I would not put more than like 20 in a 10 gallon.

If i remember correctly, its about 20-30 babies per clutch for cherry reds...

I was thinking about setting up a 5 gallon tank just to breed them.

Tell ya what, I've been meaning to try breeding shrimp for a while and I have a cycled, running 10 with just a pleco, java moss and some decor. Ill put in a dozen ghost and a dozen cherry and see if the magic happens for either kind. I think I'll take off the filtration as it will likely suck up ghost babies. Is this project worth documenting with a new thread?
