Hi guys, so I have acquired a pair of motoro rays and in an attempt to widen their palates a little I am thinking of adding live ghost shrimp (glass shrimp) for their dietary pleasure. Now I am afraid that these guys might host parasites.

My rays are 6" and eat well, but I just want to add something different to their menu. How does one go about making sure they are legit and clean for them to eat? Or does it matter? I wouldn't want to endanger anything else in the tank either if they pick up a stray shrimp here or there either. I have 2 Silver arowana, a Lima shovel nose, and a peacock bass.

Also do I just dump all 20 in at once, and let nature take it's course? Or should I house them in a separate tank and add them when I need em? What do you guys do?

Hey, I personally never heard of the quarantining of inverts but I guess it will help as a caution, I just don't see how can you tell if the invert is sick or has parasites. Also you would probably need to make an attempt at forceps feeding because I'm pretty if you dump all 20 in the tank your silvers and bass will make short work on them before they hit the bottom.

Good luck, any pics of the tank?

lol tony, same here same name

I've never thought to quarantine ghost shrimps.

If you're going to quarantine them, why not just set them up with their own little tank and get a breeding colony going? Then you can be sure the offspring are clean and healthy.

Like I said, I am new to the ray thing.

I just know it was always suggested that with Arowana, if you are going to feed them feeder fish from the pet store, that its always a good idea to quarantine the goldfish, as to make sure they are legit, and also to gut load them. So I was simply wondering if there are any similar suggestions when it comes to these little guys. I plan on buying 20-30 for the first batch, and if they are a hit, I will do this every once in a while as a treat. These buggers are expensive. at 40 cents each, its like a 10 dollar meal. Totally not sustainable as a regular food source, more of a treat and a little excitement for me to watch them scramble around a little.

Hey sorry if I spoke in a rude manner,

You should try purchasing them online, 40 cents is pretty expensive for one, by me they are 10 cents.

Yeah like you said a treat is defiantly good, if you wanna get creative you could purchase a long colored tube and place the shrimps inside so the other fish dont notice, and wait for the rays to pick up thier "sent" and let them out of the tube.

If the rays like the shrimp then you could look into breeding cherry red shrimp for them, once you get a colony going they should breed pretty prolifically and by raising them yourself you know they would be free of parasites and can gut load them easier.

ummmm well im sry even for a 6 inch ray if he did get all 20 its not realy a meal for him or her...she could probley eat 50 - 60 just her alone.
