Well, to my surprise my Giant Danios are starting to die off. Two days ago I noticed a Danio floating on the top of my tank. It looked dead, and my Severum was there pecking at it, but just to be sure, I poked it... It swam off, a little awkwardly, but it did. I did a 40-50% water change yesterday, and put some salt in the tank. It seemed to be doing a lot better, and was schooling with the rest of the group. Last night, late last night, I was walking out of my room, and the light from my room hit the tank, so I could faintly see the fish... I noticed a Danio floating. So, again, I poked it, but this time it was DEAD.

Just a few minutes ago, I noticed the same thing with another one - the same exact thing. It looked dead, I moved it, and it swam off. I can only imagine what is going to happen next.

I tested my parameters, and everything is golden. My PH is 6.2; nitrites at 0; and my nitrates are +/- 20... The only thing that wasn't where I wanted it to be was my alkalinity, it was low, at around 20 ppm... maybe even a bit lower. It was at 0 yesterday. I didn't think this was an issue, as my PH is stable. What could be doing this? They all came from the same place... Could they just be "fluke" deaths?

My Severum isn't too much bigger than them. I haven't noticed any aggression from it except for when the fish were floating (I think that was just because it thought the danio was a meal)...

Any thoughts?

Also, they are in the tank with a 2" Green Severum, a 6-7" Macrognathus aral eel, and a 6" Black Ghost Knifefish. They are all in a 40G breeder.

Have you noticed any change in their behavior other than the floating?

They won't touch the food today... That is UNHEARD OF.

They usually give me a hard time trying to feed my severum, they always get to the food before it. I used to have to distract the danios by dropping in a pinch of freeze-dried bloodworms on one side of the tank, and lure my severum to the other side to feed it it's Hikari Cichlid Gold. If not, it wouldn't have a chance. Sometimes it STILL wouldn't get to it in time. They would eat all the bloodworms I put in before my BGK could get any, which were pretty generous amounts for that reason.

Could they have actually gluttonized themselves to death?

Man STUMP im sorry that really sucks. I can't imagine Giant danio's not eating... I have had very well fed danio's for years on end with the same situation but no die off. I can't imagine what could be wrong is it affecting the BGK or the cichlid ???

Are they clamping their fins at all? How's their poop look? Swollen bellies?
Mine had swollen bellies for 3 years lol clamping fins is a big indicator with these fish though
