I am looking for more information on the Giant Gourami (Osphronemus goramy).
I was thinking of setting up a tank with a of couple these fish.
Are the males aggressive towards each other as some of the other labyrinth fish can be?
What would the ideal aquarium size be for this fish?
Thanks.

Giant gourami are hard if not impossible to sex and are a 50/50 risk when keeping with other fish or even with their own kind. They can be very vicious and kill everything it's housed with but it also can be a very gentle tank mate. It really depends on the invidual fish.

Thank you for the information. It really helps to know this. I am finding out that the people in the fish shops can be misleading when it comes to the temperments of fish.

Thanks again!

I have owned 2 of these guys, and they were both very aggressive. They eat absolutley anything!!!I would say that at the very least you should have at least a 90 gal tank for 1 of these fish. :WHOA:

Thank you for the information. Whenever I see one of them they seem so gentle I would not have thought that they were very aggressive. Thanks!

sorry but thats not true!

these fish arnt impossible to sex thats a newbie mistake. most fish can be vented.. GG are no exception

they need a lot of water especially if you want to keep more than one. aggression is said to disperse as the fish ages but im not convinced of that. of course they must breed somehow. if i had two id want at least 250 gallons. ive found mine pretty terratorial in a 7ft tank so room would be the issue on keeping a pair.

They are big bad fish that will kill fish that is going against them.Mine is a red indo breed abt 2ft long.Feed almost every types of food, from pellet to bread, live prawn to frogs, kang kong and cabbage.

well mine is at about 12 inchs and shares its tank with tilapia , oscars and a yellow lab (clean up crew) i think there is an advantage to rearing these with other none aggressive fish from an early age

Giant gourami are AGGRO. My cousin started with 2 at about 2". Even at that size there was a lot of aggression. I never thought that these guys would be that aggro. They rival some cichlids in aggression. Her GG is now about 15" and 8yrs old. Funny though it'll act like a puppy when she's around but when she leaves it turns into a glassbanger. It knows who's in front of the tank. I have a 10" GG and its exactly like my cousins GG. It'll only act up when I'm not in front of him. And he eats anything, from feeders to pellets to veggies. This guys my garbage disposal.lol
