Hi, im looking into keeping a giant gourami after I couldn't keep discus fish. So, my plan was to buy a 4ft aquarium for 3 years, then transfer it to a bigger tank once ive moved out, would this be big enough, what about a 5ft?, the tank won't have any other fish ( maybe plecto) and the plants will be in the corners, leaving a big swimming space in the centre.:nilly:

My other problem is that it will be in my garage, the garage does get cold, but we have a cat out there and we have a heater on just to make it warmer in the winter. could i put a heater in it and just keep it at 68F ( could i make it any lower? ) so when it gets below that, its kicks in and makes it warmer.
Also how could i insulate the tank? are there ways of doing this?

Thanks
Jawskk :)

Hi there! How big is the gourami? Why not get a heater?

In three years the Gourami will be too large for most 4 foot tanks.....Maybe if you buy a 120 or 150 gallon.....24" deep. In my experience they grow very fast. i would use an aquarium heater and wrap the tank in the winter. If you can keep the room at 68 it will not be terrible to heat the water to 77 or so. i do not think the fish would be healthy for long below 75 or so. Good luck!

hi, thanks, the aquarium hopefully would do me for that long, buty as you said, maybe bigger would be better. Im thinking a big heater to come on when it gets to 68 as i heard they can live through that

You would deffo need a heater in the tank to keep it at a steady 70-72F (26oC). You can insulate if with 2" Polystyrene sheeting. Its only cheap in B&Q.
A 5x2x2 ft tank may last you 3yrs at a push as long as its the only occupant but these fish get big and fast.
Good luck :)
