Well, I went to the mall yesterday, went inside the pet store and in one of these tanks, they had a 20 inch Pacu with 4 6+ inch convicts in there. It was a decent sized tank for the convicts, but don't the Pacu need to be in groups? I was wondering why the tank was so dirty, but I just started to come up with so many combinations of fish now. Anyone know why they would have a 20 inch Pacu in with Convicts in the first place?

Because they're idiots? Pacu, like most characins, do like to be in shoals and like the company of other similar fish. I'm surprised they're getting away with that because pacu will eat smaller fish when the mood hits them right.

maybe hes in a small enough tank where he cant properly turn around, whereas the convicts which are smaller have more room. therye probably staying as far away from the pacus mouth as they can.

It is a pet store, maybe he just did not have any place else to put it.

Yep, he probably just didn't have anywhere to put it. And they don't do too bad on their own, until about a month ago I had a 30"er (Colossoma macropomum, the black pacu... redbellies stay a bit smaller) that I kept by himself. Originally I had three, but one got eaten when they were about 8" and another jumped out at 15". He was VERY personable, but unfortuneatly he died while I was moving from Utah to Ohio... I think he would have been happier with other pacus, though. Great fish if you have a 1,500-2,000 gallon tank.
