Alien fish Angling Competition

"As everyone is aware, the alien species have in many ways dominated our local waters due to intentional release or fish dumping. One of the unfortunate lakes is the Subang Jaya jogging pond, situated right next to the Mesiniaga building and the Federal Highway.

However, through PeMM's and other volunteer's efforts; we have been able to reduce the population of theses aliens through the translocation of Tomans (giant snakehead) caught from the wild.

Feedbacks from regular anglers at the lake reported significant reduction of the alien species. A good indication that the programme is working well. However, we must not rest on our laurels but instead increase our efforts in reducing their population further.

Another series of lakes colonized by the alien species are the Kelana Jaya lakes. The alien species domination has been so rapid that majority of the fishes caught there were of alien species. Fishes like the Jaguar Cichlid remains at the top of list in terms of alien species caught. An unfortunate but positive sign that it has adapted well with the environment and reproducing rapidly.

Despite the release of 3 adults Tomans (giant snakehead) relocated from Zoo Negara last year to reduce the alien fish population, PeMM sees no other recourse but to organize a fishing competition and netting exercise to remove these alien species.

Persatuan Memancing Malaysia in collaboration with Wetlands International, MPPJ, Friends of Kelana Jaya and GEC has organized this exercise in conjunction with World Wetlands Day to be celebrated at Kelana Jaya Park, Petaling Jaya on 26 February, 2006.

The fishing competition is open to 150 anglers limited to 1 rod per angler. There is no registration fee but registration is on a first-come basis on the day of the competition.
Attractive prizes await those with the total heaviest catch of alien species in weight; prizes kindly donated by our sponsors and supporters of our programme" :)

giant snakehead is native fish here in Malaysia.. many countrys were banned snakehead because of it evil.. but here, giant snakehead is hero!! ;) giant snakehead can reduce alien species in lake or river..

the channa alone is an alien fish to many countries,so after washing away all that alien fish...what fish will you send to wash away the channas??:headbang2 ...gars,wolves or arapaimas wont do it:headbang2

That's Good news Phen at least it gives new light to the "snakehead" they wont see it as a menace, but as a predator that helps maintain the balance of a particular eco system..And thats an example of irresponsible fishkeeping imagine Jag's being caught in malaysia, that's exactly why the snake head is banned also in some countries cause they are afraid some a-hole hobbyist will release a pet snakehead into the streams and rivers...kudos to the snakehead:)

channa is native fish here.. you can found channa in every lake or river in Malysia.. accept for new human made lake, like Subang Jaya lake.. absent of channa in that lake cause alien fish breed very fast and effect the ecology..
