=[ keep it up with bluefin tuna and there will be no more left to eat.... if they havent reached the minimum number before the extinction line already...

damn!!! i was at these auctions in october! the tsukiji fish market :D

I just wrote a paper on northern and southern BFT populations. According to an independent study conducted by US National Marine Fisheries Service in 2008, there may be as few as 22,000 BFT left in the Atlantic. Prior to 1970 there was an estimated 9.5 million. IUCN lists both species as "critically endangered." Despite all this evidence, ICCAT (the International Committee for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas, the international regulatory committee) is allowing another 2660 metric tons to be harvested this year.

sadly it may be the last year we ever see BFT swimming through the worlds oceans. A real failure in wildlife management. :(

unfortunately according to the prevailing opinions of scientists in the EU and the USA the legal limit set by ICCAT is well above the amount needed to sustain the species. In 1983 USFMS recommended cessation of all BFT fishing stating that it should be "maintained as close to zero as possible." 1983! We've been harvesting them ever since, and it's just about over for these majestic animals.

I've seen these in person at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. They're power is unbelievable! It's a shame to see such little effort to save them.

Yup I know CITIES people are about to have a comfrence on the bluefin tuna to add them to their list, however I highly doubt that if they do end up on the list.....it will do anything at this point =[. The ICCAT is I CAN CATCH ALL TUNA........ because they are idiots and dont listen to what anyone has to say and dont really seem to regulate anything, which is sad. At the meeting this year they were even told ZERO.... they obviously didnt listen...again. I just hope people realize what they are doing and think twice about it.
