Hi everyone,
I bought a roughly 5 inch redtail catfish from a store about 2 months ago because they were keeping him in crappy conditions and he looked sick. They weren't really feeding him. He had wicked bad gill curl, as in you could actually see into his body if you looked from behind him on an angle. Since then he has gotten much better. He is eating like crazy. He is currently housed in a 125 gallon aquarium. He still has the gill curl cause I caught it too late, but I was just wondering if really bad gill curl like his might be possible to stunt his growth. Because some of the other fish in the tank I have are growing so the tank conditions are fine and I know red tail's are hardy. I feed him once every other day plenty, but he really has only grown maybe an inch tops since I got him about two inches ago and I know that's pretty slow for a red tail catfish.

I read a thread about arowana with bad gill curl and it said something about cutting the gill down to where it meets the bone. Then again its nothing like a aro. Its in arowana section have a look its quite a old thread

Gill curl will give it less oxygen. When you see a fish with gill curl, it is breathing heavier, because it's no pulling enough oxygen from less strenuous breaths. Growht wise, it might kill the fish later.
