i just bought a 16" jardini for cheap but it has really bad gill curl. its in need of an operation. i search for clove oil but all i could find is this stuff at vitamin cottage "aura cacia essential oil clove bud". can i use this stuff to put the fish to sleep? here's the google search for the oil: http://www.google.com/products/cata...ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CCIQ8wIwAw#ps-sellers
also can they die from gill curl?

You pick that guy up from Fish Den?

There are a couple people here on MFK thta have done the GC operation hopefully they will chime in. My wife picked up clove oil for me at the grocery store.

Good luck with this.

no i rescued it from some guy on CL. he was selling a 120g tank with this fish for $400. i saw the fish and asked to get just the fish. he said $80 for it but once i saw the curl i offered him $40. hopefully i can cut it without any problem.

overdosing with clove oil can cause brain damage and death. ms-222 would be a beter bet.
There are a few threads on here about arowana gill curl surgery. I think theres a vid of it too. I might be able to look around and find it..

edit/ ehh, im sure you can find it. I tried for a couple minutes with no luck.

Just search gill curl. You will find all the threads you need

I don't know about clove oil, i used OCEAN FREE Arowana Medication to knock mine out. It has instructions about quantity and usage.

That also looks like more than just the soft membrane, i think you can cut off the soft membrane then cut horizontally into the hard gill plate and it will heal. Hopefully someone will confirm that.

If you leave it they can die from it, the gills get infected.

If you are going to use clove oil the mix is 1 ml. clove to 10 ml. of everclear. I did a operation on a 13" rhom with this mixture and it worked great. You can pick up clove oil at GNC thats the only place I could find it here in Mi. Good Luck

i couldnt find any ms-222 so i got clove oil. mixed one part oil to 9 part alcohol (one cap oil+9 caps alcohol). put the fish in a 20g container with about 10g of tank water. added the oil mixture slowly (~1ml every couple minutes). after 15 minutes the fish started slowing down and went bellied up. used half of the mixture. had to cut into the gill plate cause the curl was really bad. took about 2 minutes or so. then put it back into the tank with current flowing. started swimming about a minute after it went back into the tank. dose the tank with malafix for 5-6 days and lights off. did a 30% water changed on the 7th day and 20% water changed the 8th day. didnt eat for the first week. now started to eat raw shrimp. it looks healthy now. eating shrimp like crazy. will post pics up later.

i used straight clove oil mixed in a baggie with tank water prior to putting it in the holding tank... worked like a charm.. just gotta mix it up in a bag or it wont work.. knock out fish, cut gills, put fish back in tank... dose with melafix and primafix...
