gill protrude from the side

hopefully i can get some answers from here. i have a 4 inch RTC, not sure if it was due to water changed or because of some other reason. its gill from the left side is protruding outward. there were no blood or anything.

what causes it and what should i do at this point?

if i can find out how to post a picture here, maybe you guys will understand me more better.

Ive seen alot of these...my guess is inbreeding, similiar to rtc's with other deformities and excessive gill curl. Yes, clean water and good care should clear the problem up in time. Ive also seen alot of inbred cats missing gill plates entierly.

this is what i meant. first picture shown happened from last night. and then 12 hours later, it gotten worse! now i have the 2nd fish beginning to look like that too! what should i do?? please help, thanks
