If it's not an injury, those products are junk. I have never seen any evidence of efficacy for those products in curing bacterial infections.

what does the gill plate look like - red, white, cottony, slimy. . . .

without more information it's like calling the doctor and saying "my finger hurts?" and then expecting him to give a complete diagnosis over the phone.
