I have a 220 gallon & I would like to get a giraffe cat to go along with a red arowana and a albino sailfin pleco can anyone give me any info on the giraffe ?

I have a 245 gal freshwater tank. Water change every 2 weeks, 1x a month the fuval fxs gets cleaned and the 2 aquaclear 100 every 2 weeks, temps nice and warm at 82-84F. Water is straight from the tap WITH seachem prime as the water treatment. Tank has 1 FRT, 6 various sized discus, 1 large very old pleco, 1 banjo catfish, 1 bushy nose catfish, 5 clown loaches and 2 giraffe cat fishes.

The giraffe fish need plenty of hiding spaces, they rarely come out of their hiding spots- which I have many in the tank for them to hang out. The ones i have are about 6-7 " long and seem not to get any bigger, had them for over 4 years, doing great, very peaceful fish. The only exciting time is when they engage into a pushing match with each other in their favored "tree root" house. Mostly I feed them the Hikari algae wafers which they share with the FRT, clown loaches, and other cats. My giraffes don't bother any of the fish. The most delicate fish in my tank are the discus and they are the tank clowns having a ball racing around the tank trying to get a human to feed them.

My present 2 giraffe fish must be from the smaller variety....
I want to WARN YOU that there are a LARGER kind of giraffe fish.
:)I had them, and they got REALLY big ....from cute little 2-3" to 8" and ... growing at 6 months
... so I traded it back to Brian at Ocean Blue. Thanks Brian!

just look at this link on the BIG Giraffe catfish...

The larger variety are a lot more pushy and aggressive.
They tried to push my smaller FRT around during eating time and swallow up all the algae wafers. (LOL, my turtle held is own.)
So depending on the variety of giraffe fish you get, probably will be ok with the pleco but it may be how neighborly your red arowana is with other fish.

Hope this helps.

It sounds like janev has the dwarf giraffe catfish. I had the standard giraffe ( Auchenoglanis occidentalis ) and it grew large rather quickly. Somewhere around 2 ft in 2 years. He was always front and center never hiding. When hungry they beg for food and are very entertaining. I did find that he was somewhat bossy towards my niger cat which was considerably larger than him. Great cat for sure. I'd go as far as saying he was the best cat I've ever kept and I've had mainly over the years.

What all would you like to know? As stated giraffe's get big, and they tend to be bullies. Fortnately their mouth shape prevents real damage to other large fish they mainly just head but others out of the way for food. Will eat practically anything and are fairly active catfish

the problem with giraffe cats isn't their piscivore nature

subadults and adults might eat tiny fish up to 1.5" or so

the real problem is their own size....

an adult giraffecat almost reaches the size of an adult Tiger Shovelnose and twice the bulk.

IDK, I've had my giraffe for 1 1/2 years and he's a foot long coming from being a "cute" lil baby...but, he is a bit boisterous. His buddy is the achara x tsn catfish that I brought them two home together. They are always together, with the giraffe nestling underneath the carfish's mouth...18"....but, he is a bit of a bully...loved to once suck up bloodworms, now eats entire frozen shrimp (ones for human consumption), earthworms/night crawlers, whatever his little mouth gets onto. Awesome specimen. As for hiding spots, he doesn't need any. He burrows or at least tries to burrow himself in the sand, or uses his buddy...

They are great fish swims lots mine is 2.5ft it lives with African cichilds and never tried to eat any of them. can become very tame and my comes up to be hand feed.

they are pigs! they eat like they have been starved for a month lol - they can also be bullies too. mine grew over 16" in a year!
