What size tank do Giraffe Nosed Catfish need (Auchenoglanis occidentalis)???? What should their diet consist of? Would a 125 gallon be ok? Could I keep him with a Jaguar Cichlid?
He may work with a jag depending on size but the 125g won't be large enough. They grow to 2'+ quickly. They aren't picky eaters in the least; pellets, worms, shrimp etc. One of my favorite cats for sure.
Yes they do hit the 2 foot mark quickly and can get around 3 feet long. Not only do they become long but they also become very thick as well. I have one in a 4x3x2 200 gallonish african tank and I still don't feel that is big enough at around 2 feet. I will be moving him to my 700 gallon shortly. They are very active around feeding time and need a lot of space to move due to their inflexibility. They can hold their own against pretty much any fish and may even bully other catfish. Mine takes any kind of pellets I can throw in there as well as shrimp and beefheart. They are not picky eaters and will learn very quickly to come to the top to eat. Great catfish if you decide to get one, but will certainly need a bigger tank than a 125 gallon. There is a dwarf giraffe catfish that look similar and only get about 6 inches, I don't know how it would do with a jag though.
