Once he figured out he was trapped he would try to push the wood. But I piled the wood up so he couldn't escape. I'd keep him in there for most of the day. I would let him out never gone overnite with him trapped. It didn't stop him from being mean. But it did give my other fish a break from his terrorizing them
 
I used to do this with a male betta when I had a community tank, every now n then he would start bullying every thing else so I would put him in 1 of them floating breeding traps for a few days then after I let him out he was fine for a a few weeks then it would all start again lol

A plastic bag for time out is ok, but kinda soft. I would use a blender as a time to really get the message across ;)
