well ive been out of the aquarium game for a while but im getting back in. the wife just greenlit the plan, i have purchased a used 180 tank and stand (6'x2'x2').

couple of setup questions;

1. the stand seems to be very short. the entire setup maybe sits at elbow level when im standing, this normal for larger tanks? is it so every corner can be reached?

2. i think i want to go with a wet dry sump system, and am curious about sizing the sump and pump. i know the 5 - 10x rule, but am not sure about sizing the sump to the pump.

3. it came with a eheim 2217, is this somthing that i should use? and if so can it suck from the sump and return in the sump for less mess up top?

beyond that its just stocking options. im a big fish guy. i would love to have a jardini and maybe a lima and somthing else. the wife has asked for somthing schooling. is there any schooling fish that could hold its own in a big predator tank?

i use to have a 150 gallon tank but it wasnt stocked well, under filtered and in bad shape in general. now that i have some more coin and more space i want to do it right this time.

i was also given a 110 gallon tank with a cracked bottom, if repaired, could this be used a sump? maybe stored in basement?

that seems scrambled... im just really excited!!!

thanks in advance

Can't help you on the stand and the pump questions as for a schooling fish you could do very small guppies and have plants for them to keep breeding in. The big fish might not even want to deal with the guppies since they are so small but I'd add them first to let them establish a good population in the tank also they will help cycle your tank. Thad be your best bet IMO even though they aren't really 100% schooling they'll stay together a lot and if your fish don't mess with them try some small tret specie. For the 100g sump try a liner in it if you don't want a hassle with fixing the glass and all that.

guppies will end up clogging up your filter. that being said stand sounds way too short, you will want it much higher so you have room to fit a sump under it. id use a 55g for a sump. also you need the canister a certain amount under the water level.

May I ask how? From to much suction? Never had that problem as I always have filter socks on in takes on my tanks for this reason exactly from fry to feeders.

.... why? That makes no sense. Canisters function well because they have like, 0 head (minus media of course). At any height level to the water or lower you will have the same amount of head. You could have the canister 250 feet below the tank if you wanted to (ignoring hose friction). You could also have the top of the canister level with the water in the tank and have no head.

i havent picked up the aquarium yet, so i havent measured for size of sump i can fit underneath. luckily enough my dad is a welder and its a metal stand. i could just chop all for post and raise it up. i plan on building a nice cabinet for it anyways.

so a 55 gallon sump would suffice? plus the eheim?

and could some guppies really survive? i think they would just get wrecked.

Raise the guppies in the sump. That way when they breed the fry get sucked up to the main tank for free food lol

thats hilarious lol.

another question i have is with that eheim 2217, if i were to stick the canister route with a small school, jardini and a big cat, what would be a good choice for one more canister to get some good filtration. i want a fx5 something fierce but with the coin i just dropped on the tank it might be a little while.

thanks

If you want a good filter for mech. Filtration id recommend a marineland mag 350 it allows you to switch between reg filtration with some media to a micron cartridge for water polishing.
Cost $75-100
