Hey guys I'm stationed in Japan and I have a few questions for you guys. The first pic is my male thai silk flowerhorn (pretty sure it's male anyways)

The 2nd fish is one I'm considering buying. I think it's a Texas cichlid but I'm not 100% sure, is it? I know it's hard to tell without venting but do you think it's a female?

If it is a female do you think I could cross breed it with my thai silk?

Not sure on sex, but I have a flower horn and a Texas that have been trying to make babies in my tank for a while now, but have not been successful. The eggs are taken by my catfish. But they do try for it.

that texas is a short body texas ,and i love your flower horn. the texas i believe is female with the black splotch in the dorsal fin,and that method was accurate with my texas. but others will say differently.you can see the blotch in mine and the eggs below her..in the pic with both you will see the male with no black in his dorsal. either way they babies would look cool

Id also say female. But to me it looks like an attempt at sb red Texas due to the reddish base. But that could just be the lighting.

And yes they will cross breed as long as they can get along to fertilize the eggs and are both fertile.

Hey thanks for all the replies guys I appreciate it. I have the blue silk in a 75 gal and I have a divider for it so if they don't get along then I'll just seperate the tank in half and try that method. Now I just need to figure out if the Texas ciclid is worth ¥6900 (lil less then $69)

Now that you say the price is close to $69... It seems to be a rt attempt. I can't see them wanting that price for a pure short body(but I could be wrong). If I were you I would make sure it is not a rt attempt... That way you will know its fertility without having to check it.

Thanks once again. So if it has any red then it means it was a RT attempt? And that means it's going to not be fertile?

Red texas cichlids have a low fertility rate... So when you see a rt it is safer to assume it is sterile unless proven fertile. But as stated earlier the lighting might be the only thing making it look red to us but we don't know. I was just assuming rt because of price.

The female rt should be fertile. Also that would be a nice breeding project. Once my male Thailand Silk breeds with my Red Dragon I myself will be pairing my Thai with my female rt. Keep us posted
