i too am giving up on nigerian endli's. I had 4 from one shipment (beserker also has 1 from the same shipment that has had eating problems) and mine have all seemed perfectly fine and then out of nowhere after 3 months 1 died with no prior warning overnight, a 2nd a month later, and now a 3rd another 2 months on. That leaves one still alive but it's just so strange how they just die! they all ate fine and seemed fine then I'd wake up, turn on the light to find one in perfect condition dead!

anyone else experienced this? fingers crossed for my last one!

I've been reading about this problem on several threads here.

Has anyone dissected the fish to see if they could find any signs of what's causing the problems?

I know the average aquarists probably doesn't know what to look for, but if you could find an image somewhere on the net or in a book of what the organs of poly's look like, that could help.

My guess would be there's something in the water where these are collected. Maybe an internal parasite or bacterial infection.

Sorry to hear about the deaths. :(

I guess I've been lucky. My WC endlis have been going strong for quite a while. One has been in my tanks for a few years. My original 10-12 incher has reached 20+" and is nearly as fat as a baseball bat. I just placed them in alkaline conditions with rift lake salts. Their tanks are large, filtered at 8-10 cycles per hour, and receive 40-50% weekly water changes. They've never hesitated to feed on gut-loaded minnows (with garlic extract their 1st month for parasite purging), juvie crayfish, earthworm sticks, salmon pellets, and cut raw shrimp.

my guess is that since oddball hasn't had a problem, its just a more recent thing....probably just a disease or parasite in the area they are harvesting, like cohazard suggested.

My most recent wild endli was bought only 4 months ago (see the broken-saddle endli near the back of Oddball's Oddballs (link in sig)).

hmmm, where are both of you getting these fish? same supplier or not? this really is a mystery...perhaps for scooby doo (lol rofl)

thats weird sumthing it the water the only thing i can think of ive had mine since it was 3 inches and he is 10 inches no problems just a healthy bichir

I'm still on tender hooks with mine-we're in the process of relocating at present and all my fish are with a friend. I'm hoping they pull through but my Endli did start to eat a little again before the move. But I'm still very anxious as to whether he'll pull through longterm.
I'm really sory to hear about the losses MB.:(

That is very interesting about the nigerian endli not doing so good. Oddball, what rift lake salts are you using? Are you using the one that Kent makes?

oddball you saying that they lik hard, alkaline water? I ask because where I'm moving to the water I'm told is just that?
