confused, lost, and lonely
I am about to price glass for a 2't x3'w x4'l tank, I am thinking 9mm for the sides (92mm x74mm), and 9mm for front and back (140mm x74mm), and 12mm for the bottom (92mm x92mm). My questions are if this is adequate, do I need a top strap anb bottom strap, and most importantly, what glue do I use? I have a very old tank this size in storage but it is an 8 hour drive and this one will be given to my sister when I move. It is a great size for larger fish in the 10-12" range. :feedback:

according to this caluclator your glass thickness should work, as for the top and bottom strap goes, im sure it wouldn't hurt to have them, even if just as an added safety precaution.
im sure you have probably heard this before, but i was told to used non-tempered as opposed to tempered glass.

this one guy that built my 105 gal tank just used fish tank silocone and put a few braces on top of the tank to hold it together. i dont know what he used to hold the tank while the silocone dried.. but i also used the silocone to fix it.. it was twisted on the stand and the back wall popped loss from the pressure.. i fixed the tank and the stand to make it hold water and sit level..
 
The straps are 4" wide peices of glass the same thicness as the sides glue across the middle of the tank, on top they go inside front to inside back, the same for the bottom on the inside of the tank and also glued to the bottom. I am hoping to find a stonger glue but if that is what I am supposed to use then so be it. I have framing clamps and cloth strap vises to hold things together while it cures. Now I just need to find out what the cut glass will cost.

just a suggestion, look for people that charge only per sq ft. and not per cut. one guy was charging 4 some per sq ft, and an additional 1.50 per cut. most other places usually just charge per sq ft.
 
Hi, I dun think there is a 9mm thk Glass available in the market. I am in the glass trade in SG. And I did some DIY fish tank. For your info, it is dangerous for you to build one if you just glue them together. the glass might not able to with stand the water pressure and burst out like shooting knife. I would advise you to use 12m for all side. I ever did a 5ft x 2ft x 2ft open top.. no support on top but I used 15mm. Just to keep my Gar and Arapamai.
 
I can get 1/2" and 3/8" thicknesses, the prices I'm getting quoted though remove the incentive to try it.
 
You can get acrylic cement to seal the glass.Theres a website on the enternet called glasscages.com.They sell glass, acrylic and frames.
 
I don't think they ship glass panes anymore.
