I'm just curious what the absolute max size is that you can manufacture a glass aquarium is, I'm looking at my next tank being 10' x 4' x 4' perhaps slightly bigger. Would this be wise in glass or would it have to be acrylic?

Thanks! :)

it really depends on the bracing and thickness of glass or acrylic i would go wider instead of taller just to be safe

I reckon it'll be heavy, I have a 7'x3'x3' and a 6x2.8.x2.8 already and I dislike the thought of moving them again :nilly:

Would I be right in assuming the only limiting factor is cost?

That would be my guess. You probably have to get it built on site, so that rules out the heavy thing i said before.

I would say so, personally I wouldn't make it any higher than 3 foot just for convenience but just my opinion, I would go for a 10'Lx4'Wx3'H over a 10'Lx4'Wx4'H but in saying this, a nearby LFS has an all-glass tank that is at least 4' high , definitely an impressive tank. I would suggest looking into a plywood / fibreglass tank with a glass viewing window, but if you can afford the cost of the glass by then all means do it. Post pics when you get it

Yep. If you have the cash to burn, you can always find someone who will put it to good use. If you can dream it, someone can build it.

I just came back from the Georgia Aquarium and their big tank was over six million gallons. The viewing window is 63 feet wide by 26 feet high and two feet thick.

3 x 25' (size?) whale sharks & a boat load of fishes, grouper, rays, sharks etc... The tank is actually the length/size of 2 football fields. You can not tell unless you do the behind the scenes tour. ITS HUGE! This one tank alone is more the the whole John G Shedd Aquarium in Chicago!
I hve pics but can not post them right now. Someone may have some already here?

Sorry back to the big glass tank.
Yeah if you have money then the sky is the limit.
We do acrylic in big tanks. Have one 96x36x30 high & was frikin heavy & used dollys & about 6 guys to move it into place. & glass would need to build on site or crane brought in. I would hate to see that leak! Acrylic is basically bonded for life, the seams are put together by a solvent which melts/weld them together. When you get up to this size the price might not be that much different? The main & only problem is the scratching, but you can buff it out of acrylic as pose to glass. You just have to be carefull & use the right equipment. All the public aquariums mainly use acrylic. The height makes a big difference in cost for either tank because the thickness of material needed. Plus the weight goes up. Hope this helps some.
