Hello, I am in the process of building a glass tank and Im having trouble finding a safe thickness for the glass, I've looked online on thickness calculators without luck in getting a consistent answer. The dimensions will be 72" x 24" x 16" and it will be designed as a frag tank. I was thinking of doing 3/8" thickness because the height is pretty low but I'm starting to think that won't cut it, now I'm thinking half inch just to be safe. Can anyone help? Any thoughts? Thanks.

the thicker the better. I wouldn't take the risk of breaking just to safe money.

Ok thanks, also I understand that the base piece of glass should be thicker then the rest of the tank, so if I'm planning to have half inch glass for the sides, will that be ok for the base as well or should it be about 3/4" or even 1" thick?

you could do 12mm glass for the sides and 15mm for the bottom and you should be just fine

It will also depend on the design of the tank and how much support you put across the top. 12-15mm should work for that. Just make sure there is a solid brace in the middle.

There are calculators online. More then half an inch seems crazy for only a 16" tall tank

The rated thickness is 7mm due to being only 16" high. I guess thicker wouldn't hurt, and possibly at those sizes is not a lot more expensive, but 3/8" should be more than fine. Bracing across the top is always a good idea.

Lay out your design and I can do the math for you if you want an exact number.

Without knowing how you will brace this tank, 1/2" would be my answer. If you are intending to euro race the tank with a center support, then 3/8" should be fine.

Hey everyone thanks for the replies, I've decided to go with 13 mm on the bottom piece and 9.5 mm on the side pieces and three 9.5 mm cross braces for more support, what do you guys think?
